What a wonderful graphic!  I wonder if there's another that shows the corresponding rise and fall of populations - i.e., how many died and/or migrated along with the border changes?

Indeed!  Additionally perhaps indications of the 'who'.  Seems to me that territorial expansions are often driven by an ambitious select, while territorial reverses are the delayed consequence of over-reaching adventures in the recent past.
