About the Location

Bernays Memorial Hall is a lovely Gothic Victorian red brick building built in 1871 , with handmade terracotta tiles built into its front facade and a steeply sloping Welsh slate roof.  It was built as a memorial to Ernest Bernays who died tragically in Ireland while swimming in a lake at the age of 22.  A beautiful mural adorns the front interior lobby and traces the history of Stanmore and the Bernay Hall from the time of the Romans to the present.

Stanmore derives from the Old English 'stan' meaning 'stony' and 'mere' meaning 'pool' or 'pond'.  It has been in continuous habitation since pre-historic times, and was part of the march route of Julius Caesar on his way to St. Albans.  By the time of William the Conqueror's conquest, Stanmore was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Great Stanmore and Little Stanmore.  Stanmore station opened in 1932.  Stanmore Hill is one of the highest points of London standing at 152 metres (499 ft.) high.
